Recalled Catt ready for new start
London Irish captain Mike Catt

London Irish captain Mike Catt says England's new-look squad needs to start taking responsibility for their displays under new coach Brian Ashton.

Catt, 35, has been recalled but several big-name players have been omitted from the 33-man squad for the Six Nations after England's dismal recent form.

"It's up to the players to perform under this new regime.

"Brian's shaken up the squad and there will be a few pretty disappointed they aren't in," he told BBC Five Live.

Catt could find himself playing outside Shane Geraghty, his 20-year-old London Irish team-mate, when the Six Nations gets under way next month.

Either Geraghty or Newcastle's Toby Flood is likely to start at number 10 against Scotland on 3 February with the third fly-half in the squad, Jonny Wilkinson, currently injured.

"Shane is a hell of a talent," said Catt.

"He's only 20 and he's obviously got a lot to learn about international rugby but the squad that Brian has named has a lot of experience.

"Shane's a very hard worker and will really benefit from being involved with the best players in the country."

Geraghty, who was born in Coventry, played for Ireland at Under-16 level but has since represented England Under-18s, 19s and 21s.

And Geraghty, arguably the most surprising selection, admitted he was glad to have Catt in the squad.

"I am delighted and surprised to be included in the Six Nations squad," said Geraghty.

"It is a great honour to be named in the same squad as players like Jason Robinson, Phil Vickery, Martin Corry and Mike Catt.

"I am fortunate that Mike is also involved as I can continue to benefit from his great experience."

Catt also paid tribute to the skills of Andy Farrell, now a rival for the England number 12 shirt.

Farrell moved to rugby union after a glittering career in league, but the former Great Britain captain has finally shaken off his well-documented injury problems to establish himself with Saracens.

"He's come on in leaps and bounds," said Catt.

"He's got a lot of experience and he offers a kicking game as well. He's a big guy in distribution, kicking and defence so he has all the attributes that England need at 12.

"It's great that he's in the squad. He's got a bit to learn but he's picked it up very quickly at Saracens and being involved with England means he can pick it up even quicker."

The World Cup winner insisted that Phil Vickery was the right choice as England captain, while spelling out his respect for previous incumbent Martin Corry.

"Vicks is a fantastic guy, he's got so much respect from everybody and he leads from the front like Martin," added Catt.

"But there are five or six players in that squad who captain Premiership teams, and they can help him along the way from a tactical point of view.

"Martin is a hell of a soldier and someone you'd go to war with."
