New England era
Wasps head coach Shaun Edwards
Edwards works day-in, day-out with Vickery at Wasps
Brian Ashton's first squad as England head coach certainly made people sit up and take notice.

Ashton took over from Andy Robinson before Christmas, and his Six Nations training squad marks a clear break with the previous regime.

Wasps prop Phil Vickery replaces Martin Corry as captain, while former skipper Jason Robinson comes out of his self-imposed international exile.

There is also a call-up for former Great Britain rugby league captain Andy Farrell - but no place for England and Wasps veteran Lawrence Dallaglio.

Shaun Edwards, who coaches Vickery and Dallaglio at Wasps and played alongside Farrell and Robinson at Wigan Warriors, assesses some of the biggest changes.

PHIL VICKERY AS CAPTAIN

Vickery is an automatic pick in the England side

Phil is a quietly-spoken fella for a tight-head prop, but he talks a lot of sense and is a real student of the game.

The most important thing about a captain is that he has to be an absolute shoe-in for his place in the team and I think Phil is one of the few people who could say he would definitely be in anybody's starting England XV.

He's been voted the best in the world in his position and I'm sure he'll be very determined to get back the mantle of the best tight-head in the world from New Zealand's Carl Hayman.

JASON ROBINSON'S RETURN

I'm not surprised he's made himself available. I thought that, come World Cup time, Jason would want to pull the white shirt on again.

Sale full-back Jason Robinson
Robinson last played for England in February 2005

He gave some very valid reasons for pulling out before - he was spending a lot of time away from his family.

But I really did expect him to come back and he'll help England - full-back has been a problem position for them.

Some people think he's not quick or good enough any more but he captained Sale to the Premiership title last season so he's not doing too much wrong.

The thing with Jason is that because he's scored so many unbelievable tries, if he goes through a game without doing something incredibly spectacular then people think he's not played that well.

But if you look at the finer details of his game - defence, retrieving kicks and so on - then you see he's actually had a good game.

ANDY FARRELL'S SELECTION

Saracens centre Andy Farrell
Farrell has established himself at centre after starting off as a flanker

I don't know if he will make the team, but Andy is really making steady progress in rugby union after all his bad luck with injuries.

I've watched him closely on tapes, and he's certainly well suited to the number 12 position (rather than blind-side flanker).

He has a huge physical presence as well as being a very creative footballer with ball in hand.

END OF THE LINE FOR LAWRENCE DALLAGLIO?

Wasps number eight Lawrence Dallaglio
Dallaglio played in last year's Six Nations, but is now out of the squad

You should never write Lawrence Dallaglio off. He's come back from so many setbacks in his career.

We shouldn't put the knife into him just yet. He's battling well and he's in good condition physically.

If we can pick our form up at Wasps then I'm sure he'll be part of that and I'm sure he'll be knocking on the door.
