The 36-year-old, who retired in 2000, has been in charge of the Tykes' academy for the past five years.

"Stuart's appointment indicates the direction we want the Tykes to head," said Leeds chief Gary Hetherington.

Tykes captain Stuart Hooper said: "The appointment shows the club's intention to develop from within and its commitment to its people."

Lancaster, who was born in Penrith in Cumbria, is excited by Leeds' focus on youth development as they target an immediate return to the top flight.

"With my appointment the club have made a bold statement as to the future direction they would like to take," he said.

"By growing the club through an academy system that develops players from Yorkshire, it will create a pool of talented players that will provide us with a long term and sustainable future."
