Bristol 23-26 Worcester
Lee Robinson opened the scoring with a fine try for Bristol

Shane Drahm notched up 16 points as Worcester moved up to fifth in the Premiership with an exciting win.

Aisea Havili cancelled out Lee Robinson's opening try as the Warriors took a 13-7 half-time lead.

Bristol hit back to level the scores at 20-20 as Jason Strange crossed to match Drew Hickey's earlier try.

Drahm and Strange then struck a penalty apiece to ensure the scores stayed level before Drahm finally made the game safe with three minutes left.

The match started badly for the hosts as veteran Samoa international Brian Lima appeared to be badly injured inside the first minute and replaced by Mark Denney.

But later tests revealed Lima had no more than a "massive headache".

In his absence, the hosts still took an early lead when big winger Robinson cut through from a scrum on halfway and raced clear before powering over the line with a despairing Worcester tackler hanging off him.

Strange converted to give Bristol a 7-0 lead but Worcester hit back as Drahm landed two penalties and, in between, the Warriors scored a very similar try to Bristol's fine effort.

Again it featured a hefty right winger - in this case Tongan powerhouse Havili - being sprung through the middle and finishing from halfway.

Drahm's conversion made it 13-7 but Strange trimmed the gap to three a minute before the break with his first penalty.

Strange levelled the scores with a second penalty after 50 minutes but Worcester went back in front when Hickey finished off a long-range counter-attack.

Drahm converted to make it 20-13 but Bristol hit back immediately as Strange converted his own try after Drahm's kick was charged down.

A penalty apiece from Strange and Drahm made it 23-23 but Drahm slotted his fourth penalty with three minutes left to send the visiting supporters home happy.

Worcester lost number eight Pat Sanderson, playing his first game back after a five-week lay-off, just before half-time with a cut head.

But Sanderson reported no recurrence of the back injury which had kept him out of the team and should be available for England's Six Nations clash with Wales.

  • Bristol coach Richard Hill:
"A lot of endeavour went into this game and the forwards were working very hard.

"But we played the rugby around the middle third instead of playing in the opposition third a lot more.

"I will give the players a bit of a rollicking but as long as they realise and put right their errors we can go forward from here."

  • Worcester coach John Brain:
"We showed an awful lot of character to come back after Bristol's second try and win.

"We had a tough Christmas and over the past couple of weeks we have looked at ourselves and this is the start of the way forward.

"Bristol isn't an easy place to win but I think this victory has put us in a good position in the table."
