Former Scotland captain Jim Aitken has welcomed Ian McGeechan's move to quit the Scottish Rugby Union for Wasps. Aitken, captain of Scotland's 1984 Grand Slam side, says McGeechan must share responsibility for the current turmoil in the Scottish game.
"The mess we are in is half down to Ian and I welcome the fact he has had the good sense to walk away," Aitken said.
"It is not before time but the outlook is a bit brighter if the likes of Sean Lineen can be brought in as a coach."
McGeechan resigned from his post as SRU director of rugby just 18 months after assuming the role from Jim Telfer.
He was instrumental in bringing in Matt Williams as Scotland coach, but one of his last tasks may now be to oversee the Australian's removal.
"Director of rugby is a non-job anyway," Aitken added. "What does it mean?
"The important thing is to clear out all the deadwood that is still within Murrayfield."
