McGeechan stepped down from coaching Scotland last year |
Three-time Lions coach Ian McGeechan has been approached about a fourth tour as part of Sir Clive Woodward's staff for the 2005 tour to New Zealand. The Scottish Rugby Union has confirmed that McGeechan, its director of rugby since retiring from the Scotland post, has been asked to join the trip.
McGeechan stepped down from frontline coaching after last year's World Cup.
An SRU spokesperson said: "There's informal dialogue at the moment but no decision has been taken."
McGeechan has a proven Lions track record, coaching the Lions on three successive tours between 1989 and 1997.
He led them to series victories in Australia (1989) and South Africa (1997), while his 1993 side came agonisingly close to beating New Zealand, losing the series 2-1.
McGeechan turned down the chance to coach the Lions in 2001, by which time when he was back in charge of Scotland.
His decision saw New Zealander Graham Henry, then Wales coach, became the first foreigner to lead the British and Irish combined team.
McGeechan was also a Lions tourist as a player in 1974 and 1977.
