Telfer issues Lions plea
Former Scotland and Lions coach Jim Telfer

Former British Lions coach Jim Telfer has urged Sir Clive Woodward not to use his entire England staff for the 2005 tour to New Zealand.

Woodward will head up the coaching team, with Bill Beaumont as manager.

But Telfer, forwards coach for the victorious 1997 series in South Africa, believes Woodward should call on coaches from the Celtic countries.

"I would like to think some of the assistant coaches will come from other nations," he told BBC Radio Five Live.

Telfer added: "It would be a worry to be honest if they were all English.

"There is a wealth of experience in the other countries, and as far as selection is concerned you have to make sure you get the right blend.

Clive will know that a Lions tour is not like an England tour

"(Ireland coach) Eddie O'Sullivan is a good example. He has brought on good young players, and I am sure there will be a few Irish players in the squad.

"Having coaches from other countries there will give a different overall view. I think that is good on Lions tours."

Telfer, who worked in tandem with fellow Scot Ian McGeechan in South Africa, believes that Woodward and Beaumont - both Lions tourists as players - will be sensitive to the particular demands of a Lions tour.

"Clive will know that a Lions tour is not like an England tour," Telfer added.

"You have to gel four groups of players together and deal with disappointed players who are not getting into the Test team, when they are used to playing for their own countries.

"There is a lot of psychology and good man-management needed, and you can't just have a few Celtic players there.

"But I think people might be surprised at the amount of players from the Celtic nations coming through by next year."
