Malllinder is not currently in club coaching |
Former Sale director of rugby Jim Mallinder is the leading candidate to succeed Pat Howard as Leicester head coach, BBC Radio Leicester understands. It is thought that Mallinder, who is now part of the Rugby Football Union's Academy set-up, has already rejected a chance to join Leeds Tykes.
Former Italy coach John Kirwan and Wales skills coach Scott Johnson are also on the Tigers' shortlist.
Other candidates may emerge but Martin Johnson is unlikely to be among them.
Scott Johnson was in the frame when Dean Richards left in February 2004 while former All Black Kirwan was seen on a tour of Welford Road a fortnight ago.
