Northampton captain Bruce Reihana converted Ben Cohen's late try to cap a thrilling comeback win over the Exiles.

The Saints looked to be heading for defeat when Irish claimed a 20-10 lead after 27 minutes with the help of 15 points from fly-half Riki Flutey.

Reihana, who scored a fourth-minute try, added another as well as a second penalty to make the score 18-20.

Flutey added another penalty after the break but Cohen's try and Reihana's conversion sealed the victory.

Reihana ended the game with a total of 20 points to guide his side to only their second win of the season.

He started the scoring in the fourth minute when he converted his own try before long-range tries from Flutey and Dominic Feau'nati turned the game around.

Reihana's scoring kept his side in the game but although they started the second half with plenty of possession, Saints could not find a way through.

And Flutey's third penalty, with 21 minutes to go, looked to have been enough for Irish.

But with time running out, the New Zealander was penalised for a late tackle to give Northampton one last chance.

Reihana took a quick tap penalty and the ball was spread to Cohen, who jinked his way through the defence for his third try in four games.

The try tied the scores at 23-23 and Reihana sparked scenes of wild celebration when he slotted over his touchline kick.

  • London Irish boss Brian Smith called for countdown clocks operated in sync with the referee's watch:
"The sooner they can get these damn clocks into order and operational the better because you run the risk of playing until the home team scores.

"The clocks were meant to be installed at the beginning of the season but they (Premier Rugby) haven't got their act together.

"I don't want to sensationalise this but clocks have to be at grounds because this can't continue to happen.

  • Northampton boss Budge Pountney:
"Someone said Bruce can't kick. But if he can't kick then I'm the Pope - and I'm not even Catholic.

"We lacked energy and so didn't play particularly well. We have been all about performance this year and that dropped from previous games.

"But the guys stuck together and we'll take the win. We are happy with that."
