Leicester's England contenders had a field day as the Tigers mauled an abject Falcons side at Welford Road.

Centre Ollie Smith scored two of the home side's 11 tries before coming off at half-time, ruthlessly exposing teenager Mathew Tait in the process.

Leicester scored four tries in a 15-minute first-half spell, and seven more followed after the break.

Fly-half Andy Goode, pushing for an England call against Ireland, converted all 11 in a 28-point personal haul.

The rout was Leicester's record Premiership win and increased their lead at the top of the table to 12 points over Sale.

But it was an embarrassing day for Newcastle, for whom it was a record Premiership defeat.

Remarkably, the visitors scored the opening try through centre Mark Mayerhofler after Goode had notched an early penalty.

But once Austin Healey took Goode's pass and exposed a gap inside Tait in the 22nd minute, the game was as good as over.

Smith scored two swashbuckling tries in the space of 10 minutes, the second off a great angled run, either side of an easy run-in for Daryl Gibson.

Goode had a hand in all four scores, directing proceedings with the confidence of a man who could well be handed a similar job for England in Dublin next Sunday.

His penalty with the last kick of the first half gave Leicester a 34-10 lead, and they showed no mercy to the Falcons after the break.

With the side-stepping Seru Rabeni on for Smith, the Tigers scored a fifth try three minutes into the second half as Leon Lloyd sold Tait a dummy and held off the youngster's tackle.

The powerful Henry Tuilagi ran 50m for the sixth after Goode intercepted a pass from Tait, whose confidence was now shot to pieces.

Neil Back scored the first of his two tries with a trademark score as the Tigers pack mauled their way over the line.

And Will Johnson beat elder brother Martin to the eighth after a sprightly burst from Sam Vesty.

Back collected his second before the best try of the game with 11 minutes left.

A sparkling handling move between backs and forwards and a pin-point cross-kick from Goode into Martin Corry's arms allowed Geordan Murphy to dive over.

Lloyd raced over in the left corner to finish things off, Goode completing his 100% record with his 13th successful kick.
