Wilkinson is looking to return for England in the Six Nations |
Jonny Wilkinson will start his first game for 11 weeks when Newcastle Falcons take on Sale Sharks in the Zurich Premiership on Sunday. The England captain and fly-half will line up opposite Charlie Hodgson, who has impressed in the England number 10 shirt while Wilkinson has been injured.
Wilkinson has played three games as substitute since a bicep injury halted his return after long-term injury.
"Jonny's chomping at the bit and raring to go," said Falcons coach Rob Andrew.
"We are delighted to have him back, but we are not a one-man team, as we have proved over the last few weeks."
Wilkinson's return comes just over five weeks before England start their RBS Six Nations campaign against Wales.
It is understood that England coach Andy Robinson is considering Wilkinson as a potential inside centre at the Millennium Stadium with Hodgson staying as fly-half.
However, Sunday's encounter will offer the chance to look at the two number 10s in direct competition.
"I cannot let myself think as far ahead as England, nor can I allow a club match to become a personal confrontation," Wilkinson said.
"You do not go out there thinking you have to beat your oppositie number; I need to put the Newcastle game plan into action."
Newcastle have eased Wilkinson back into action following an injury-ravaged 2004.
He has not played for England since kicking them to World Cup glory in November 2003 and did not play any rugby between January and August because of a serious neck and shoulder problem.
