Leota should be playing again in two weeks |
Trevor Leota is recovering following an operation to reattach his ear after the hooker collided with another player's elbow against Oxford University. The accident almost completely severed Leota's ear, with only the artery keeping it attached to his head.
The Samoan will be out for two weeks and will miss the first two rounds of the Heineken Cup.
Wasps director of rugby Warren Gatland said: "It was a horrible injury to see but he should be okay."
Leota was rushed to hospital and underwent plastic surgery on Wednesday morning.
Members of the Wasps medical team said it was one of the most horrific injuries they had seen on a rugby field.
Gatland added: "The loss of Trevor is huge for us as he is such an important part of our game.
"However, this season we seem to be very unlucky with injuries and every time we get a player back, we lose another one."
Leota is the second Wasps hooker to be sidelined as Ben Gotting is still out with an ankle injury.
Phil Greening and Jonny Barrett will be involved when Wasps launch their defence of the Heineken Cup against Biarritz on Sunday.
