Stimpson leads Tigers to victory
Tim Stimpson
Stimpson played a major part in the Tigers' win
Saracens 18-26 Leicester Tigers

Leicester clinched their first away win of the season at Vicarage Road to keep themselves in sight of the Zurich Premiership summit.

Former England full-back Tim Stimpson produced a flawless kicking display with three penalties and two conversions in blustery conditions.

I was surprised that just one of their players went to the sin-bin

Saracens coach

In contrast, Andy Goode, who left Welford Road for Saracens over the summer in search of regular first-team action, made three of eight kicks and was largely anonymous in open play.

Steve Booth and Geordan Murphy both crossed in the second half for Leicester, who also had a Booth try disallowed.

Tom Shanklin and Thomas Castaignede touched down for Sarries but the London club lacked Leicester's firepower.

The Tigers started brightly and centre Leon Lloyd was almost clean through in the early stages before being collared by the home cover.

But Leicester won a penalty at the breakdown which Stimpson stroked over.

  Match facts:
Saracens 18 (8)
Tries: Shanklin, Castaignede
Cons: Goode
Pens: Goode (2)
Leicester 26 (9)
Tries: Booth, Murphy
Cons: Stimpson 2
Pens: Stimpson 3
Drop Goals: Murphy

Goode was finally successful with a penalty from right in front of the posts after three missed attempts to give his side a brief lead, before Stimpson kicked another three points.

Saracens scored the first try in the 33rd minute when the increasingly impressive Shanklin intercepted Sam Vesty's pass before sprinting half the pitch to touch down in the corner.

Inevitably Goode missed the conversion and Stimpson kicked his third penalty on the stroke of half-time to give his side a 9-8 lead.

Leicester scored 45 seconds after the restart when Booth scampered over after some quick hands from Vesty, with Stimpson adding the two points.

Tigers number eight Martin Corry was sin-binned in the 47th minute and Saracens took full advantage with Castaignede skipping between two defenders.

It might have been totally different had Andy Goode kicked all his goals but thankfully he missed

Goode was on target with the conversion but there was controversy in the 65th minute.

Booth crossed for what looked to be a try but play was called back to the halfway line for an off-the-ball infringement by the Tigers.

Leicester were not to be denied and in the 72nd minute Murphy touched down for a try.

Goode kicked a penalty before Leicester had the last word when Murphy unleashed a long-range injury-time drop-goal from a tight angle to seal a deserved victory for the Tigers.
