Delaney hopes Friday feeling can help Nottingham crowds

Nottingham director of rugby Glenn Delaney hopes the club's decision to play Friday night rugby will swell the crowds at Meadow Lane.

The Green & Whites host Esher on Friday - the first of three games being switched from a Sunday afternoon.

Delaney told BBC Radio Nottingham: "I've grown up with Friday night rugby in New Zealand. We think it's going to be a big occasion.

"Meadow Lane is a beautiful stadium and the ground comes to life under lights."

Delaney hopes the club can build on the success of the recent home game against Plymouth where a "tickets for schools" scheme helped double the attendance from the usual gate of just over 1000.

"We had nearly two-and-half thousand against Plymouth and that's what we want," Delaney said.

"We need to be performing to that level of people on a regular basis because that says we are serious about what we do.

"It's another flavour and another angle. We are incredibly respectful of the sporting prowess of the city. The city is led by two big football teams.

"We understand that and know that but we have a slightly different offer, so if we look at in a different way and play on a Friday night then we can be thing that kick-starts the weekend of sport in Nottingham.

"And that's what we are hoping to do. It's exciting and a really nice slot for us to play."
