Bristol secured their 11th consecutive Championship victory with an uninspiring win at Nottingham.
Sam Giddens went over after just five minutes to give Bristol an early lead before a loose pass from Jason Spice allowed Nottingham to touch down.
Bristol led 10-7 at the break and tries from James Phillips and Redford Pennycook gave then a 22-10 lead.
Two penalties for Nottingham in the final quarter made for a nervy last few minutes but Paul Hull's men held out.
Bristol head coach Paul Hull told BBC Radio Bristol:
"Everyone is frustrated really. I'm pleased with the win but just not the performance."
"There were aspects of the game where we were loose and there were a couple of scoring opportunities we let slip."
"The guys have got to learn, when it is pressurised and when the opposition are there to spoil, to show more composure and be a bit more clinical."
