York go out in Shield semi-final

Rugby ball and posts

York rugby club's season ended with a defeat by Sandal in the semi-final of the Yorkshire Shield.

The current holders beat York 20-10 but first-team manager Alan Robertshaw told BBC Radio York his men put in a creditable performance.

"It's very disappointing. When we were on top we could have scored but they were lucky to stop us then they had the best of the second half.

"It's very disappointing in the end but good luck to Sandal in the final."

He added: "Sandal finished fourth in the league above us. They won the Shield last year so they are the holders. It shows that York can go up a league and hold their own."

Robertshaw said he is confident the club can build on what has been a strong end to the season.

"We've had a word with all the lads and I think everybody is staying. We've got a couple of recruits and we're looking forward."
