Director of rugby Andy Key has backed Leeds Carnegie to bounce back from their first defeat of the season.

Leeds lost 27-12 at Yorkshire rivals Doncaster Knights at the weekend and now face another tough trip to third-placed Bedford Blues on Saturday.

Key told BBC Radio Leeds: "The character is in the side to bounce back and respond positively.

"We know we can play. Now we have to refocus and prepare right to make sure the same doesn't happen at Bedford."

Leeds' lead to the top of National One has been cut to eight points by Exeter, after their win over Manchester.

Exeter also have one game in hand on Leeds.

Key added: "I'm sure it has given Exeter a boost, but they have to go to Nottingham next week and we'll hope that they do us a favour.

"Doncaster also have to go to Exeter at the end of the season, so they, like us, still have tough games to go.

"You have to accept this defeat was maybe around the corner and this may happen from time to time.

"It would have been fantastic this season to go undefeated, but if we get promoted it will still be an outstanding season and that's what we'll be focusing on."

Meanwhile Leeds' flankers Calum Clarke and Jacob Rowan, along with scrum-half Dan White, have been called in to the England under-20's squad to face France on Friday in the Six Nations.
