Southern Nomads win the Shield

Rugby Union

Southern Nomads defeated Douglas B 12-10 on Saturday to claim the Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield title and retain their 100% record in the competition.

Douglas led 5-0 at the interval through a John Hill try after playing the first half with a powerful tail wind.

In the second half, Nomads' leading try scorer James Hammal powered over and Al Corrin added the extras before Martin Jones added a second to lead 12-5.

Ady Shimmin scored late on for Douglas but Nomads were not to be denied.

Club captain Andy Lean told BBC Isle of Man: "I'm over-the-moon for the guys and for the club, we're incredibly proud to win.

"It's a fantastic achievement for everyone who has contributed to the club especially as our second team Emerging Nomads have fulfilled all their fixtures for the second successive season."

The most pleasing aspect of this season has been the successful transition of our youth players into the senior sides.

Doug Hornby

Club coaching coordinator Doug Hornby added: "The most pleasing aspect of this season has been the successful transition of our youth players into the senior sides and the impact they've had on our success is without question.

"This is a testament to all concerned with player development and a huge positive for the future of the club."

Elsewhere, Ramsey B claimed second-spot with a fantastic 23-21 win over Vagabonds B.

Vagas used a strong wind in the first half to lead 16-5 at the interval but Ramsey came back in the second period to claim the win.

Meanwhile, Castletown beat Emerging Nomads 10-5 at Poulsom Park.
