White has not worked since leading South Africa to World Cup glory

Lions coach Ian McGeechan says World Cup-winning coach Jake White will not be joining his backroom staff as a consultant for next year's tour.

White, who led South Africa to victory over England in the 2007 World Cup final, said he spoke to McGeechan last week about the South Africa tour.

Asked if White would help the Lions, McGeechan said: "No, that won't happen.

"He left a message, saying it would be nice to meet up for a coffee and a chinwag. That's as far as it went."

"There was no discussion of a consultancy role," added the Scot.

Last week White, who has been offered consultancy work with Wasps and Saracens, told The Times of South Africa that he had told McGeechan he was "actively in the market for a job in rugby".

The South African had added that he would have considered a role with the Lions if it had been offered.

The 44-year-old has been out of rugby since leading the Springboks to glory at last year's World Cup.

He could start working for Saracens on a short-term contract as early as next month, his agent Craig Livingstone told BBC Sport.

"Saracens have offered me a contract to work there for a week or two and McGeechan, at Wasps, has offered me a similar deal," White said.

"Now I'm suddenly faced with a choice, which was something I didn't have, or didn't seek, for almost a year.

"I made it clear to South African rugby that I wanted to be involved in helping them because I feel I have a lot to give back to rugby.

"But they haven't expressed an interest in using me, so I have to look at my options."
