Cambridge finished fifth in National Two last season
Cambridge player-coach James Shanahan has dismissed suggestions he is close to retiring from playing.
The 31-year-old centre has featured in all four of Cambridge's National League Two matches this season, including Saturday's 58-13 win at Southend.
He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "There are a lot of people thinking I should be retiring but I believe I've got another one or two years in me.
"I'm working very hard in training and I've got a really good side around me."
Shanahan added the strength of his squad this season has helped him to cope with the demands of the game.
"It felt pretty easy on Saturday, especially when the team is playing like that," he said.
"I still want to get over the try-line and a lot of the boys are getting in front of me and scoring, so maybe my legs are getting a little old."
Cambridge take on second-bottom Mounts Bay at home this Saturday and Shanahan is confident his side can get their fourth win of the season.
"They've been really successful for the last eight or nine years but they've lost quite a few players and they haven't been able to bring in the quality that they've lost, they've struggled to hit the pace but I'm sure they'll be up for it.
"There'll be no better place for them to get a win than to come up here and beat us."
