England beat New Zealand for the first time in five years in Sevens |
England lost 14-12 to Samoa in the semi-finals of the London Sevens at Twickenham on Sunday. England, who stunned New Zealand in the quarter-finals, fell behind to Reupena Lavasa and Alafoti Fa'osiliva tries. Winger Tom Biggs came off the bench to score a solo try and Ben Foden added a late effort but it was all too late. Samoa went on to beat Fiji 19-14 to win the final but New Zealand secured the overall series for the eighth time, despite their shock loss to England. England captain Ben Ryan said: "I think we took a huge step forward this weekend. This was the first time in five years that England have beaten New Zealand in international sevens. "I had hoped that the confidence we gained from that win would have been the springboard for a semi-final win, but it was not to be. "One or two small errors and some faulty decision-making cost us the game." Scotland were beaten 19-17 by Fiji in the quarter-finals and then lost out to South Africa in the semi-finals of the Plate. Wales reached the final of the Bowl but lost 19-12 to Australia while New Zealand ensured they did not leave empty handed, beating South Africa by the same score in the Plate final. Spain upset Kenya 10-7 to take the Shield - their first piece of IRB Sevens Series silverware since 2004.
