Second-from-bottom Ulster made it two wins out of two under Matt Williams with a hard-earned victory over the title-chasing Scarlets at Ravenhill.

Despite facing a strong wind in the first half, Ulster led 5-3 at the break after Isaac Boss had sneaked in on the blindside in stoppage time.

A try by Rhys Priestland brought the Scarlets level in the 64th minute.

But lock Matt McCullough then got over for the decisive touchdown before Neil Best got a third try right at the end.

The match had been scoreless until the 39th minute when fly-half Priestland landed a penalty for the visitors.

But Ulster snatched a half-time lead when, after a great forward pick and drive from 20 metres out, scrum-half Boss scrambled over for the try.

Ulster increased their lead soon after the break with a long-range penalty by O'Connor.

But the Scarlets drew level when Priestland got away from O'Connor's tackle to slip in for the try, which he failed to convert.

Ulster went straight upfield to camp on the Scarlets line with some more impressive drives and were duly rewarded when a neat off-load by replacement prop Justin Fitzpatrick saw man-of-the-match McCullough dive over.

McCullough's replacement, Neil Best, put the icing on the cake when he wrestled free from more forward momentum, with O'Connor converting for good measure.
