Pundits on England

You have to be really blunt and say that the type of rugby that Brian Ashton is trying to coach, these players aren't capable of doing.

The execution is poor and the forwards aren't Brian Ashton's cup of tea.

He likes players who can run with the ball, offload in the tackle and play with some tempo and some speed.

We've said it so many times, games are won and lost up front and if you don't get your foundations right, the backs are irrelevant.

It's all very well having Jonny Wilkinson at number 10, you have to punch your weight up front and in 40 minutes against Wales and again against Italy, England didn't do that.

As a former player it seems very simple, as a forward you just have to run the ball as hard as possible and they just aren't doing that for some reason.

If Cipriani comes into this sort of side, with a lack of leaders, he will be left on his own and he will try things and make mistakes.

You just want him to do the simple things but instead he will try and do something that he shouldn't. You saw the difference today between the master and the apprentice.

We questioned Jonny Wilkinson before the game but he showed his class in the first-half and proved that he is still the man to wear 10 for England.

The English forwards, after being so dominant in the first half, went off the boil.

The back row did not carry the ball. When England were not going forward, Jonny Wilkinson and the backs were not coming into play - the Italian backline were there to be cut to pieces.

If the forwards had been doing their job, Danny Cipriani would have been going forward and probably would not have tried that chip late on.

I just don't know why England went off the boil in two successive games

It was inexperience and not the brightest thing to do when you are 11 points in front with five minutes to go.

He's young, he's enthusiastic and all of a sudden, he gets the ball and he wants to do something with it.

It's always very easy being number two - there is no expectation because you are not starting the game.

But when the responsibility is on you, it's a completely different proposition.

If France or Wales had played in that second half, they would have hauled those points back and England would have lost again.

I just don't know why they went off the boil in two successive games.
