Coward went on to describe McKay as "a good coach and good man".
It is understood that forwards coach Mark Hewitt will take over the side for their match at Exeter on Saturday.

McKay's three-and-a-half year tenure has been one of the most successful in the club's history. They finished third in National League One in the 2005-06 season, the Pirates highest ever position in English club rugby.
And last season he guided the side to victory at Twickenham over the Exeter Chiefs in the National Trophy.
