Harlequins recorded their second win over London Irish this season with a narrow triumph at Reading's Madejski Stadium in the EDF Energy Cup.

Two disallowed tries on a wet afternoon cost the Exiles dear as the hosts were unable to build on their recent Premiership win over Gloucester.

Jeremy Staunton missed a penalty and failed to convert Phil Murphy's try.

And Irish were made to pay when Chris Hala'ufia's try from a well-worked scrum was converted by Adrian Jarvis.

Staunton was relieved of kicking duties, with Delon Armitage kicking Irish into a brief 8-7 lead.

But Adrian Jarvis's reply in the last seconds of the first half restored the visitors' two-point advantage.

There was no scoring at all in a second half which almost featured a try for Peter Richards against his old club.

But referee Roy Maybank penalised the London Irish scrum for an early shove.

Harlequins could afford to miss two penalties and still claim the honours.

  • London Irish director of rugby Brian Smith:
"Peter Richards should have been awarded his try but we didn't take our chances in the second half and were frustrated by random refereeing decisions, but we didn't help ourselves because we turned the ball over in their 22.

"On five or six occasions in the game we had a chance to turn pressure into points inside their 22 and we didn't take them, so with all the intent in the world and coming here wanting to play, we have to be better than that.

"We didn't deserve victory on that basis."

  • Harlequins director of rugby Dean Richards
"We were a bit surprised to be up at half-time and we shut them down in the second half."
