Cambridge ground out victory to take the honours after a dour 125th Varsity match at Twickenham.

Apart from an early double sin-binning, the only highlight of the first half was a penalty try awarded after Oxford came round the wrong side at the scrum.

The game improved after the restart, with Joe Roff key to most of Oxford's threats, but there were few flowing moves from either side.

John Blaikie went over from close range at the death to seal a forgettable win.

Afterwards, Cambridge captain Blaikie admitted it was a satisfying win, if not an attractive one.

"From the start, we had the wood on them in the scrum which makes all the difference," he said.

"I don't think it was the most pretty game to watch, but we played to our strengths and I'd like to think we pleased the purists.

"And that was my first try in five years, so I'll definitely claim it."

Australian World Cup winner Joe Roff said the mood in the Dark Blue camp was "sombre" but said the team should not forget how the season had been overall.

"Every person left everything they had to give on the pitch," he said.

"We'll wallow in this defeat, but overall, this has been a special season."
