Cambridge won their first Varsity Match since 2002 after coming from behind to beat Oxford at Twickenham.

The Dark Blues started the 124th clash strongly and two James Whittingham penalties put them 6-0 ahead.

Cambridge scored through Rudolph Bosch and although Whittingham added another three points, the Light Blues sealed victory with four second-half tries.

Nic Alberts, Andrew Clements, David Akinluyi and Bosch all crossed although Oxford were given a late penalty try.

It was an impressive turnaround for Cambridge who lost full-back Ian McInroy after a nasty clash of heads early on.

They also struggled to cope with Oxford's power and Whittingham deservedly put them ahead.

But they worked their way back into the game and South African Bosch powered his way over after a line-out drive on 28 minutes.

However, his name will go down in folklore for all the wrong reasons after he became the first player to be sin-binned in a Varsity game for taking out Oxford's James Jones at a line-out.

Whittingham added another three points but the game was turned on its head in the opening four minutes of the second half when Alberts, another South African, crossed after a series of drives from the Cambridge forwards.

All the pressure was coming from Cambridge and after laying siege to the Oxford line, in a spell which also saw the sin-binning of prop Sean Brophy, Clements was able to power over.

You can't take the credit away from Cambridge - they played a very simple game plan

Oxford were rattled and full-back Anthony Knox had his clearance charged down by the lively Akinluyi who had the simple task of touching down.

The score effectively sealed the game, although Oxford were awarded a penalty try with six minutes to go after Cambridge pulled down a rolling maul.

Cambridge were not done there and Bosch was pushed over for his second try with the clock running out.
