I've had a lot of highs with England but this is a real low. It goes without saying that it's hugely disappointing to be booed off at Twickenham.
Looking at the whole autumn international series, it's probably been a case of one step forward, two steps back for us and that's extremely frustrating.
We started off positively against New Zealand, crossing their line four times and what has been missing from our game over the last two or three years is creativity.
Lewsey found himself out-muscled by a physical Springbok side |
We were very creative against the All Blacks - but we went backwards in a big way against Argentina.
We progressed a little last week when we ended our losing run against South Africa - but now we've gone backwards again by losing to them just a week later.
In terms of our actual performance, I feel like we shot ourselves in the foot. We were very clinical in the first 25 minutes, but we conceded 13 points in a short space of time through silly errors and taking our foot off the pedal.
Conceding nave penalties in our own half really hurt us and made us lose our way and I thought we relied too much on Andy Goode's kicking rather than going through the phases.
We let them off the hook, but credit to South Africa, over the 80 minutes, they probably deserved to win it. We could have won, but we didn't.
 | We have to pull together and this is when we'll find a lot out about the players' characters |
We didn't lose through a lack of effort, but execution-wise, we weren't good enough. We had enough opportunities to win it and weren't good enough to take them.
The atmosphere in the dressing room after the match wasn't exactly cosmic, to put it mildly. We're all hugely disappointed.
Whatever repercussions there are from this result, the players have to take some responsibility.
We all need to go back to our clubs and do everything we can to raise our individual standards.
A bereft England side must search for answers before the Six Nations |
It's very difficult to play a certain way week-in, week-out for your club and then tune in to a different style with England.
What we're trying to do with England has to filter back to the clubs in terms of improving standards across the board.
I genuinely believe England can get back to winning ways.
Looking ahead, the Six Nations will be very tight but we have to be look at doing better than we have done over the last two years.
It's not like it was a few years ago when England were expected to win most games by 30 points. Every game is touch and go.
We have to keep plugging away. We have to pull together and this is when we'll find a lot out about the players' characters.
I've got a week off now, and I just want to switch off from rugby. There'll be a lot of stuff flying around in the media, so I'm glad to be getting away from it all for a while.
