Josh Lewsey - 6: Not a vintage display. Looking to attack, but blind alleys seemed to be all he could find. Having his clearing kick charged down in 22 summed it up. Mark Cueto - 5: Scored from about 10cm out with a poacher's try - even if replays suggested a fumble. Dropped another chance over the line, and kicked badly. Mathew Tait - 5: After initially adopting an ill-advised battering-ram approach, found space out wide in first half but caught up in second-half malaise. Jamie Noon - 5: Solid in defence, but on the few occasions he got the chance to run it was heads-down stuff. Seems to seek bodies to run through, not space. Ben Cohen - 7: A much-improved display. Looking for work with barnstorming runs on both flanks, and saved two tries with brilliant sweeping runs. Andy Goode - 5: Did not show enough to make the number 10 shirt his own. Goal-kicking started well but misses cost England dear, while the backline spluttered. Peter Richards - 6: A bits-and-pieces display in the 50 minutes he was on. Decent service, but quick ball was few and far between for England's backs. Phil Vickery - 6: On his less-favoured side of the scrum, but the World Cup winner stood his ground. Dependable presence, if quiet in the loose. Lee Mears - 6: Line-out functioned efficiently for the most part, but runs were conspicuous by their absence. Held up agonisingly short in corner. Julian White - 5: Helped the scrum stay solid throughout, but a stranger to the ball during open play. England need more from their front-row forwards. Tom Palmer - 6: A respectable but unspectacular showing. Part of an effective line-out, and some powerful clear-out work at the ruck. Chris Jones - 7: A typically athletic performance from the Sale lock. Strong in the line-out and more comfortable in possession than many of his colleagues. Joe Worsley - 7: The route one approach of the Springbok pack suited him down to the ground as he put in several big tackles, and showed up well with ball in hand. Pat Sanderson - 5: Lovely wide pass to Cueto showed his capabilities, but struggled to consistently provide the link between backs and forwards. Martin Corry - 5: Perhaps guilty of trying too hard. Misdirected pass wasted one clear try-scoring chance, and looked to be carrying the weight of the world at the end. REPLACEMENTS: George Chuter - 6: Line-out work was fine, but the injection of direct and powerful running England were hoping for did not materialise. Ben Kay - 5: One line-out take was passed back to no-one in particular, in accordance with England's generally scrappy second-half performance. Lewis Moody - 7: Lively display. Showed some good hands to set up one attack down the right, while he showed up all over the pitch. Shaun Perry - 6: Came on for Richards in the second half and did little wrong, but failed to spark the necessary England revival. Toby Flood - 5: Had all of three minutes to conjure up something. Touched the ball twice and must have been wondering what was the point of bringing him on.
