England make one change for Pumas
Perry Freshwater
Freshwater will win his fourth England cap this weekend
England have made just one change to their team for Saturday's game against Argentina, with Perry Freshwater coming in for injured prop Andrew Sheridan.

The Perpignan forward, 33, will make his first England start in the only alteration to the starting XV that were beaten 41-20 by New Zealand on Sunday.

On the bench, Tom Palmer, Josh Lewsey and Toby Flood replace Chris Jones, Mark Van Gisbergen and Andy Goode.

Martin Corry stays at blind-side flanker and retains the captaincy.

Sheridan sits out the match after a sore back meant he could not train on Tuesday or Wednesday.

We are just saying to everyone 'you deserve another chance and deserve to play against Argentina'

Andy Robinson,
England head coach

"Argentina play the game in a unique way - they love to maul and with the close-quarter ruck and drive they are probably the best in the world," said head coach Andy Robinson.

"We need to match that challenge and in the scrum, and with Perry performing well for Perpignan it was an easy call to make."

Freshwater said: "They like to hit, hit hard and keep going. There's no secret to it and we have to stand up to that."

Robinson has resisted the temptation to make wholesale changes despite the record defeat to the All Blacks.

"Apart from a six-minute spell we were pleased with the way we approached the game," he said.

"The way we played in the second half we are just saying to everyone 'you deserve another chance and deserve to play against Argentina'."

And he will be hoping that the players repay the faith shown in them by ending England's dismal run of defeats.

They have now lost six games in a row and another loss at Twickenham this weekend would equal their worst ever sequence which came in 1971-72.

Lewsey has made a rapid recovery from a knee injury which forced him off during Wasps' Heineken Cup defeat against Perpignan.

If he comes on against Argentina it will be his first cap since last season's Six Nations.

606 DEBATE: What do you think of Robinson's selection?

The selection means there are no places in the squad for flanker Tom Rees or wing Mark Cueto, who have both been struggling with injuries.

In-form Saracens centre Ben Johnston, who captained England Saxons against Canada this summer, does not make the match-day 22 despite being called up to the squad on Monday.

However, New Zealand-born prop Freshwater gets his first start having appeared three times as a replacement last season.

There will now be numerous changes for one of the two South Africa Tests later this month as Robinson will not field the same player in more than three of the autumn Tests following an agreement between England and Premier Rugby.
