Giteau has played at inside centre or fly-half for the Wallabies

Giteau will be given his chance at number nine for the first time at international level as George Gregan and Sam Cordingley are both ruled out.

"We may take three scrum-halves to the World Cup and I hope that Matt throws a spanner in the works," said Connolly.

"I also hope George plays well in 2007. It's a good problem to have."

Giteau has established himself as a centre or fly-half for the Wallabies but started his career as a scrum-half.

His switch is not the only one Connolly is likely to trial this autumn.

Fly-half Stephen Larkham could be moved to inside centre while winger Lote Tuqiri may play at 13.

"At the moment we are experimenting in a few different positions," said Larkham. "But we are still not sure of the final line-up for the Wales Test.

"I've been put at inside centre for a couple of runs at training and am certainly enjoying it."

The Wallabies left home on Friday for their seven-match tour, and Connolly has named a squad of 37 in the hope of finding new stars in time for next year's World Cup.

Connolly believes Australia need to improve their depth if they are to have any hope of winning in France.
