Ireland get the big start they were looking for. A series of phases is capped when Ronan O'Gara lofts a high cross-kick into the right corner. Ireland earn some breathing space with a period of possession inside Australia's half. A bullocking run by Paul O'Connell and a quick break from Gordon D'Arcy gives Ireland a sniff of the line and they earn a close-range penalty which Ronan O'Gara strokes over.

The Wallabies are brimming with energy and dynamism, powerering right and then recycling quick ball left to put over full-back Chris Latham for a clinical score. Stirling Mortlock misses the conversion.

The Wallaby backs are threatening but Irish midfield defence is holding firm. But the home side win a penalty mid-way into the Ireland half and Stirling Mortlock nudges it over.
