England's quest for a fourth straight Hong Kong Sevens title continued with emphatic wins over Canada and United States taking them into the last eight.

Ben Gollings notched two tries in a 40-12 rout over the USA, while pacy wing Tom Varndell came on late in the 36-12 win over Canada to bag a brace.

"Day three is when you have to perform at your peak," coach Mike Friday said looking to a quarter-final with Samoa.

Meanwhile, New Zealand needed an injury time try to beat plucky Japan 23-19.

There were contrasting fortunes for the home nations in other matches.

Scotland opened the day with an 82-0 demolition of Singapore, but were then whitewashed 35-0 by New Zealand.

And Wales crushed China 29-0 but lost 21-17 to South Africa to drop into the Plate competition where they will play Portugal in the quarter-final.
