Australia completed a resounding 30-12 victory over South Africa in the first match of the Mandela Challenge Plate. Inspirational fly-half Stephen Larkham set Australia on their way while a Matt Giteau brace and a try from Mat Rogers took them to 25-6 with 30 minutes left.
South Africa had lots of possession but only had four penalties from Percy Montgomery to show for their efforts.
Drew Mitchell wrapped up victory for the home side in Sydney with a last-minute try on his Test debut.
The match started tightly with both teams exchanging penalties before Larkham brought the match to life.
He eluded prop Os Du Randt and Bryan Habana's covering tackle to score in the 23rd minute.
Rogers then beat several tackles in a solo run to sent Giteau clear in the left corner before adding a third try himself following a long chase.
Giteau's mis-kicks prevented the Wallabies surging further ahead.
But a Larkham chip set up a fourth try as Australia skipper George Gregan sent Giteau over for his second.
South Africa tried to step up the pressure but all Montgomery, who had two spells in the blood-bin, could do was send over a fourth penalty.
In the closing stages, Mitchell, on as a replacement back, sprinted away to seal the Wallabies win.
The second Mandela Challenge match takes place in Johannesburg on 23 July.
