Wilkinson in rare competitive action for Newcastle last year |
England hero Jonny Wilkinson's latest attempt to return to action after injury has been put on hold for a week. Wilkinson, beset by various injuries since the 2003 World Cup, had groin surgery in November but had hoped to play for his club Newcastle on Sunday.
"He is fine, his adductor is just a bit sore. There haven't been complications, it is part of the recovery process," said Falcons chief Rob Andrew.
Wilkinson, 26, is now set to return against Borders on 15 January.
His last match for England was the World Cup final and his last appearance for Newcastle was in mid-November.
"We've taken on board all the medical and clinical advice, and with these things you often just get a gut feeling as well," said Andrew.
"We thought it would be stupid to risk him this week and throw him straight in when we could let him have another full week of training.
"He has trained more with the team this week, and has done every team session apart from the full contact stuff on Wednesday afternoon."
Wilkinson has been limited to five starts for the Falcons this season.
