New Zealand's Hayden Reid scored in the final |
New Zealand defeated England's conquerors Fiji 33-19 in the final of the South Africa Sevens in George. New Zealand romped into a 33-5 lead before two late Fiji tries added some respectability to the scoreline.
Both sides are now equal with England, who won last week's event in Dubai, at the top of the IRB Sevens standings.
Earlier, defending champions England were beaten 19-12 by Fiji in the semi-finals after Kai Horstman of Harlequins was sin binned and then sent off.
Fiji seized on Horstman's yellow card to score just before half time, but early in the second half Mathew Tait scored a thrilling try from almost his own line to put England back in touch.
But the second sending off of Horstman left England badly exposed and a late try from Neil Starling was too little too late.
For a resurgent Fiji it was revenge for last week's narrow loss to England in the final of the Dubai Sevens.
Argentina were the other losing semi-finalists, going down 28-14 to New Zealand.
England coach Mike Friday was disappointed with the result but was still proud of the team's performance.
"It's always incredibly difficult when you are down to six players and it was a very competitive match.
"Sometimes it's just not your day and some decisions go against you and today was one of those days for England.
"There is plenty for us to build on and we will focus on the next two tournaments in Wellington and Los Angeles.
"It's vital that we bring a level of consistency to every single tournament and that's what we will be working on when we re-group after Christmas."
In the final of the Plate, hosts South Africa beat Samoa 12-7 while in the Bowl final Australia, who beat Scotland 26-24 in a cracking semi final, defeated Canada 38-12.
