Dallaglio quit too early

By Zinzan Brooke

Will Dallaglio regret retiring when he still had petrol in the tank?

It has been quite a start to the season in England off the pitch but I don't think it is all bad.

For starters I don't really think it is a huge loss that Sir Clive Woodward has gone.

He has set some really high standards but I think it is more of a loss that all the players have retired, like the Johnsons, the Dallaglios, the Leonards and so forth.

I think Woodward has put a great management structure in place but now I think England need a hands-on coach, so it is a good time for him to go.

I would not want to take anything away from what he has achieved.

However, speculating from the outside, I don't think the England team that won the World Cup, which contained the likes of Martin Johnson, needed a lot of coaching.

Now, with younger players coming in, they need someone who is more hands on and Andy Robinson seems to be the obvious choice.

I'm not too sure who else is around but Robinson has certainly proved as a player and a coach that he is up to it, so I think it would be a good thing if he took over.

To be honest I was more disappointed that Lawrence Dallaglio has decided to quit Test rugby because I feel he has a couple more years left in him.

You might as well blow away all the cobwebs now and start to rebuild

I thought he played really well Down Under, he was one of the guys who stood up and was counted.

I know he's got a World Cup under his belt but it's not nice losing five of your last six games as captain - that's not a good way to go out.

He should have taken a break - maybe missed the autumn internationals - and then come back refreshed for the Six Nations.

Will Greenwood told me he was glad he had a break over the summer and if Lawrence could have had that rest maybe he would not have retired, in my opinion, prematurely.

Now that he has retired the captaincy is once again up for grabs and Jonny Wilkinson seems to be the front runner.

His return to action is massive for the whole of English rugby.

It's not all bad news - Jonny's back!

His presence has already been felt in the Newcastle team and I think it's fantastic that he's back.

He is being talked about as a possible England captain and I certainly think he is capable of doing the job.

It all depends on whether it sits well with him and I think it probably would because I think Wilkinson is a big game player and he likes responsibility and pressure.

You have to be careful, because not all great players respond well to the pressure of captaincy.

For example I think Tana Umaga's form has slipped since he was made New Zealand captain - he seems to have lost his zing since taking over.

A lot of people are worried the same might happen to Wilkinson, but I think he could handle it, although there are other guys who could do it like Phil Vickery and Richard Hill.

It is a time of massive change for English rugby and it could be a difficult time, but you might as well blow away all the cobwebs now and start to rebuild.
