Jonny Wilkinson has rejected calls he has adopted a less physical approach, following shoulder surgery.

Wilkinson took another significant step on Sunday, by spearheading Newcastle's 33-18 victory at Bath.

"People are asking me if I've changed the way I play and really that's not the case at all," he said.

"What has changed is the way the team is shaping up, which means I am able to play a certain game and I am able to enjoy just letting the ball go a lot."

Suddenly everyone is saying: 'Are you staying away from the contact?'

The England fly-half, who made his first full appearrance in 10 months last weekend, added: "So I let the ball go, and suddenly everyone is saying: 'Are you staying away from the contact?'

"But it's not the case. It is just nice having these boys there, who want to take responsibility off you.

"I have got a few bumps and bruises, and you continue to get those. What I like is the fact that when I get them, it's not like I was.

"I am just pleased to be able to get up after each tackle at the moment and not have an episode, touch wood."
