Waratahs thump Sharks

New South Wales Waratahs ran in six tries on their way to beating Natal Sharks 48-14 in their Super 12 clash.

Tim Donnelly, Milton Thaiday, Mat Rogers, Ben Jacobs, Phil Waugh and Cameron Shepherd all crossed for the hosts at Sydney Football Stadium.

Rogers also contributed six conversions and two penalties as the Waratahs went joint top with ACT on 10 points.

Gregor Townsend and Trevor Halstead touched down for the Sharks, with Butch James converting both efforts.

Also on Saturday, South Africa's Bulls produced a powerful forward display as they beat the New Zealand's Wellington Hurricanes 40-19.

Jacques Cronje was impressive, and set the tone for the match early on as he set up Eddie Fredericks for a simple try.

Burly centre Frikkie Welsh also weighed in a a try at the start of each half.

Springbok fly-half Derick Hougaard kicked 17 points, including a dropped goal, in a flawless display of goal kicking.

In other second-round action on Saturday, Australia's Queensland Reds beat the Waikato Chiefs of New Zealand 39-25 in Brisbane.

The Reds, who led 18-10 at half-time, moved to fifth in the table, one place above the Chiefs.

Wallaby centre Steve Kefu shrugged off illness and the threat of a drugs ban to score two tries in the opening period for the Reds before the Chiefs levelled at 18-18 midway through the second half.

The turning point came 17 minutes from the end when Reds full-back Chris Latham went over before Wallaby winger Wendell Sailor sealed the win and a bonus point.

Kefu's rugby future was in doubt earlier this week after he took a banned substance prednisone to treat viral disorder Bell's Palsy.

But he was cleared to play by the Australian Rugby Union after missing last week's loss to the Otago Highlanders.

The Highlanders were on the wrong end of a powerful forward display as they lost 46-25 to the Western Stormers.

Springbok centre De Wet Barry scored two of the Stormers' six tries to help them earn a bonus point.

The Highlanders had led with first-half tries from Aisea Tuilevu, Josh Blackie and Seilala Mapusua.

But scrum-half Johannes Conradie's reply kickstarted the Stormers' comeback.

On Friday, Fiji winger Rupeni Caucaunibuca scored a hat-trick of tries to lead defending Super 12 champions Auckland Blues to a 38-29 win over Canterbury Crusaders.

Caucaunibuca scored once in the first half and twice more in the second as the Blues recovered from a 24-12 half- time deficit to claim a derby victory.

Carlos Spencer (2) and Mils Muliana also crossed over to help Auckland hit back from last week's defeat by ACT.

Reuben Thorne, Daniel Carter and Ben Blair touched down for the Crusaders.

Auckland seized control by scoring 19 unanswered points at the start of the second half.

But Canterbury, last year's finalists, gave themselves a chance when they pulled back to 31-29 with 10 minutes to go.

Carter missed a difficult penalty attempt which would have put them in front before the Blues rubbed more salt in their wound - Spencer scoring a length-of-the-field try in the final minute.

In Friday's other game, skipper Stirling Mortlock scored two tries and created another as the ACT Brumbies thrashed the Cats 68-28 to go top.

Mark Gerrard and rookie lock Mark Chisholm scored two tries apiece and Joe Roff landed nine conversions for an 18-point haul.
