Juries' late try sealed the match for South Africa |
South Africa ended New Zealand's four year reign as champions of the Dubai Sevens in a thrilling end-to-end encounter which finished 33-26. The Springboks, who defeated top seeds England in the semis, in the end had the pace to overcome the more experienced All Blacks.
Coach Chester Williams said: "No-one gave us a chance of winning. We came here really just to save our dignity and honour so this is fantastic particularly with all the problems of South African rugby at the moment.
"We had to dig very deep for our win but I feel now we have restored pride in the game in South Africa."
In a breathless final of attack and counter-attack, South Africa struck after just 20 seconds through Tonderai Chavhanga with a try under the posts converted by Earl Rose.
Then Amasio Valence hit back for the All Blacks scoring with a well-timed run to square things up at 7-7 after three minutes.
Scintillating pace
Fourth seeds South Africa showed their speed when Marius Schoeman broke from deep in his own territory to touch down in the corner.
Almost immediately the All Blacks hit back through when Craig De Goldi was slipped a pass by Tafai Iosa after a 40m run.
Valence then converted to nudge New Zealand into the lead and Tafai Iosa capitalised on that lead with his seventh try of the tournament to take the All Blacks into the break 19-12.
The scintillating pace of Danwell Demas opened up the New Zealand defence after half time levelling the scores with a converted try at 19-19.
With the Springboks gaining ascendancy, Dale Heidmann picked up a fumbled ball in his own 22 to run the length of the field and Earl Rose's conversion pushed them to 26-19.
The All Blacks hit back with a brilliant sidestep by Justin Wilson splitting the defence open and his conversion brought them level.
But the last word went to South Africa with a fantastic break by Fabien Juries from a turnover ball sealing the match in front of a capacity crowd in the Dubai Exiles ground and ending a four year winning run in the desert for the New Zealanders.
