Ugo Monye impressed for England |
England sailed into the quarter-finals of the Dubai Sevens with a self-assured 40-0 victory over old enemy France. England's third win, following a 45-0 triumph over Morocco and a 75-0 thrashing of Sri Lanka, gave them supremacy in Group A and supported their top seeding for the IRB tournament.
France had no answer to the impressive English unit, spurred on by a largely expatriate crowd who still have England's World Cup victory in mind.
Simon Amor's side will now face Pool B runners-up Argentina on Friday for a place in the semi-finals.
Amor led by example against France, crossing once in each half and landing one conversion.
Harlequins winger Ugo Monye, who had looked so impressive in the opening game against Morocco, scored another first-half try as did Tony Roques of Saracens.
Rob Thirlby scored again for England before Amor went over to take England out of sight.
In the dying moments Geoff Appleford of London Irish streaked the length of the pitch to score the final try, and Ben Gollings continued his fine form for the day with four conversions.
Argentina led 14-7 at the break in their Pool B game against New Zealand.
But the Kiwis fought back with a second-half try from Karl Te Nana, who was then sin-binned.
Anthony Tuitivake then crossed for his first try of the tournament as New Zealand ran out 28-14 winners.
In Pool D, fourth seeds South Africa brushed aside an unconvincing Australia team with a display of speed and power to win 34-7.
Australia could manage only a Paul Warwick consolation try in answer to South Africa's six tries.
Jose Van Rensburg crossed twice and Tonderai Chavhanga, Paul Delport, Marc De Marigny and Marius Schoeman picked up one apiece.
South Africa's performance added to their credibility as serious challengers for the tournament, the first leg in the IRB Sevens series.
Australia, meanwhile, scraped through with narrow victories over Zambia and Kenya.
One of the emerging crowd favourites of the tournament was Oscar Osula, who grabbed a hat-trick of tries in Kenya's 33-14 win over Zambia - including the 10,000th try of the IRB World Series.
Samoa beat Fiji 12- 5 to top Pool C.
Fiji will face South Africa, Samoa will take on Australia and New Zealand will play France in Friday's other quarter-finals.
The London Broncos' first flirtation with rugby union ended with a 24-7 defeat in the last eight of an exhibition tournament against the Marauders - an invitation side made up of professionals from England, Wales and Scotland.
