Matt Williams led Leinster to Celtic League title success |
Leinster coach Matt Williams and Ulster boss Alan Solomons are both in the frame to take over as Scotland coach from Ian McGeechan. Williams met up with Scotland officials last Wednesday while Solomons saw them on Monday to discuss taking the reins from McGeechan.
McGeechan will finish his coaching duties with Scotland following the World Cup, which starts in October, and then move upstairs to replace Jim Telfer.
It is also believed that former All Black coach Laurie Mains has been in contact with the SRU.
Solomons, 52, is the more experienced and used to be assistant coach to Nick Mallett when he was in charge of South Africa.
He also led the Stormers to South Africa's first-ever Super 12 semi-final three seasons ago.
He has gradually seen saw Ulster improve in Europe under his tutelage, and successfully blood home grown talent into the side.
He has a year of a three-year contract to run.
Williams, 44, took over at Leinster Lions four seasons ago following a spell with New South Wales Waratahs.
The Australian confirmed he had spoken to Scottish Rugby Union officials.
"The easiest thing is to be honest and say I have spoken to some officials of the Scottish Rugby Union,'' said Williams.
The SRU are talking to a lot of people |
"It was not really an application or them coming to me.
''There has been no offer, but there is nothing to rule out.
''I have known Jimmy Telfer for a long time.
"This stems from coaching New South Wales against a touring Scotland side in 1998.
''I also met up with him while touring with the Waratahs over here in 1991 and 1997.
"Obviously I got to know people on those occasions, while with the Celtic League and European Cup now makes it easier to meet people.
''The SRU are talking to a lot of people.''
Williams was being hunted by Saracens at the end of last season when his initial three-year contract was due to expire.
However, following his success with Leinster when they won the Celtic League title, he was offered a new improved three-year deal.
