Redpath blames basic errors

Scotland's Chris Paterson stops Clement Poitrenaud
France controlled the game in Paris
Bryan Redpath said Scotland let themselves down by making silly mistakes as they slipped to a 38-3 defeat against France in Paris.

Redpath's 50th appearance for Scotland was marred by their second heavy loss of the RBS Six Nations following a 36-6 reverse at home to Ireland.

The captain also sustained a head wound which required stitches at the Stade de France.

"They are a very good side, but we made a lot of mistakes to make it easy for them in the first half," said Redpath.

"In the second half the ball retention was poor, so we are very disappointed."

The purpose and desire was there today so I think we're on the right track

Redpath believes it is skill rather than motivation that is letting Scotland down.

"The guts and determination are not a problem," he said.

"But it was the simple basics we did not do well."

Scotland's only score came from a Chris Paterson penalty, while the French went over for four tries.

Man of the match Francois Gelez proved coach Bernard Laporte correct for bringing him into the side in place of Gerald Merceron.

Gelez contributed 17 points but was still not totally satisfied with the performance as his side bounced back from defeat in England.

"We were very good in the first half and scored three tries," he said.

"It was more difficult in the second half and we have a big job on our hands for the rest of the tournament."
