Wigan stand-off Trent Barrett has agreed to join Cronulla Sharks when he returns home to Australia at the end of the season.

The 30-year-old former Kangaroos international had been given permission by Wigan to end his three-year contract early because his wife is homesick.

Barrett will take a cut in salary for the move but will join up with Australia coach Ricky Stuart.

"I'm extremely excited about having Trent join this club," said Stuart.

"I've got no doubt he will be very good for the Sharks both on and off the field."

Barrett, who is Wigan's acting captain while Sean O'Loughlin is sidelined through injury, has made 47 appearances for Wigan since joining in 2007 after 11 seasons at St George Illawarra.

He enjoyed a superb first season in Super League, but missed out to St Helens hooker James Roby for the Man of Steel award.

Cronulla beat off four other NRL clubs, including St George, to land his signature.

Barrett has 11 caps and made seven State of Origin appearances for New South Wales.
