Barrett is a key player for the Warriors |
Stand-off Trent Barrett has dismissed reports claiming he is ready to quit Wigan Warriors. There had been claims in the Australian press suggesting Barrett's father Bruce was set to welcome him home because the playmaker's wife was homesick. "I don't speak to my father very often but he has been telling me what he has read in the papers as well," Barrett told BBC Radio Manchester. "I think you can disregard everything that's in that particular piece." Barrett, who joined Wigan from St George Illawarra Dragons in 2006, is halfway through a three-year contract at the JJB Stadium after enjoying an excellent first season with the club when he won the Rugby League Writers' Association Player of the Year award. He said: "I am very happy in Wigan and I'll certainly be doing my best for the rest of the year. | As far as I'm concerned Trent's staying with us - all the noises have come from Australia |
"There's no qualms from me about playing for Wigan. Wigan is a fantastic club and I'm honoured to be here playing for Wigan Warriors. "I am definitely here for the rest of this season. I would definitely not walk out on the club and I would not do that to my team-mates." Barrett's denial follows Wigan coach Brian Noble insisting the stories were wide of the mark. Last week, Barrett's agent said the 30-year-old wanted an early release from his contract for personal reasons. "As far as I'm concerned Trent's staying with us - all the noises have come from Australia," said Noble. "He is totally focused and playing with us this year. Everyone has personal circumstances and what we don't do is discuss them in the media." But his agent Wayne Beavis said the former Australia Test star planned to meet Warriors chairman Ian Lenagan to discuss his future. "It is for family reasons that Trent might be looking at coming home," Beavis told the Wigan Observer. | 606: DEBATE |
"I've spoken to the Wigan management and told them Trent has got a family issue and was planning to come to them to discuss it." If he leaves, three Australian clubs - the Dragons, Canberra Raiders and Canterbury Bulldogs - are expected to chase his signature for 2009. Beavis added: "I've had a couple of NRL clubs ring me to say they're interested if Trent does become available. "I'm not going to enter into any discussions with them unless he asks for a release and is granted one." Barrett's father Bruce was quoted as saying that he expected his son to leave Super League. "He thinks Wigan will give him a release," he told the Sydney Sunday Telegraph. "I don't think they will stand in his way. I'm pretty sure they will let him go. As a parent, I'm over the moon he's coming home. "Wigan could not have looked after him better. He's not unhappy with the football over there but (Barrett's wife) Kylie is homesick. "They have two young kids and another one on the way - that's brought everything forward."
