Barrett becomes the second Australian to win the award

The 29-year-old has had an outstanding debut Super League season, playing an instrumental role in Wigan's resurgence as they reached the play-offs.

"Trent is all quality, as a man, a player and a team-mate - he's a coach's dream," said Wigan boss Brian Noble.

Barrett won by four votes from St Helens full-back Paul Wellens, who claimed the award in 2006.

He becomes only the second Australian to win the award after Jamie Lyon, who won the accolade in 2005 during his time with Saints.

Barrett, who signed from NRL club St George Illawarra Dragons on a three-year deal last year, has played in 32 of Wigan's 33 games this season, scoring 18 tries.

But his playmaking skills have been even more impressive, setting up numerous tries including Liam Colbon's score in the 21-18 victory over Hull on Saturday.

"It is unfair to say he has done it single-handedly at Wigan but he has certainly been influential at pivotal moments and on Saturday night he came up with a pass play that not many others could have done," said Noble.

"We need to keep the team ethic and, whilst Trent gets the plaudits, he will be the first to recognise he couldn't do it without his team-mates."
