Monaghan calls for better defence

Warrington Wolves half-back Michael Monaghan admits it has taken him time to adjust to the attacking philosophy of Super League.

The 28-year-old former Manly Sea Eagles captain signed a four year contract at the Halliwell Jones last summer.

He told BBC Radio Merseyside: "Coming from Manly, we were really focused on stopping teams scoring points.

"If you look at our defensive record this year we are really not giving ourselves a chance to win games."

He added that Wolves need to find a balance between their attacking instincts and actually nullifying the opposition.

"At Manly our primary focus was stopping other teams scoring against us.

"When the other team are struggling to score against you it does open opportunities to counter-punch.

"If you look at teams like St Helens and Leeds, they're probably the two best attacking teams in the competition.

"Look at their defensive record and they're the two best defensive teams in the competition as well so I think they've found the right mix."
