Demetriou will switch from shirt eight to 13 for the new season |
Wakefield Trinity Wildcats captain Jason Demetriou is confident of being fit for the start of the new Super League season. The loose forward been given the all-clear to start running again after knee surgery during the winter. "I can now get stuck straight in and now need to get my fitness up quickly," Demetriou told BBC Radio Leeds. "I know I need to work hard to be ready for the season start and will do everything I can to make it." Demetriou aims to play in the friendly at Hunslet Hawks on 24 January with a view to making the Wildcats' opener at Harlequins six days later. "If I can make the Hunslet game and have a good game there then I can put my hand up to make the first game," he said. "But all that will be up to John [Kear, head coach]. He'll have the final say on whether I'm fit enough to play that first game or need to get more training under my belt." | We need to maintain the attitude that served us so well last season |
In 2010 the Wildcats will be looking to build on their successful 2009 campaign, where they reached the play-offs. "Everyone is pleased with the squad has been put together, but we know we have a lot of work to do," Demetriou continued. "Obviously the weather has meant we haven't done as much work as we'd have liked to, but John's worked hard to get some indoor training facilities. "In the next couple of weeks we'll be really able to step up our training. We know we have brought in a lot of new faces and a lot of quality faces in our squad, but we need to maintain the attitude that served us so well last season. "If we combine that with the quality that we've acquired then things should go well."
