Wakefield give backing to Smith
Tony Smith
Smith is a former England and Great Britain star
Wakefield chairman Ted Richardson is confident new coach Tony Smith can lead the club away from the Super League relegation zone.

Former Great Britain scrum-half Smith was appointed after Shane McNally had his contract terminated on Wednesday.

"Tony has our complete confidence," said Richardson.

"We are close to agreeing the contracts of all of our top players to ensure that Wakefield are in the Super League next year and challenging for honours."

Meanwhile, McNally said his dismissal would not affect his confidence in the furture.

I've been coaching since 1984 and I think I still have a lot to offer

"It's never good to get the sack but I'm not bitter. You would end up being a twisted old person," he said.

"It's the nature of the beast. It's like being a racing car driver. There's a good chance you'll crash one day. It's my turn.

"This is a setback but it's not going to affect my confidence. I've been coaching since 1984 and I think I still have a lot to offer.

"If someone out there also feels that way, I'm happy to sit down and talk."
