Harlequins winger Jon Wells has been forced to retire after failing to recover from a long term neck injury.

The 31-year-old former Castleford, Wakefield and London Broncos player has featured in each Super League season and was in his testimonial year.

Wells underwent surgery at the end of 2009 but has since developed further problems with his neck.

"It's been my livelihood for the last 15 years, so it was a very tough decision," Wells said.

"But in the end it was one I didn't have much choice over.

He added: "I had a neck operation at the end of last year, fixed one problem and created another and unfortunately I've not been able to get back to point where I can help the guys out."

Quins coach Brian McDermott told the club website: "He has been a fantastic servant to this club and for the sport.

"I really hope he gets all he wants from his testimonial year and his future because he deserves it. He goes on to the rest of his life with the best of our wishes."
